Because the thermostatic regulator on the waterbath is out by 0.5 degrees celcius? Perhaps with an idea of what the bath is being used for etc. I may be able to speculate further...

Why is a water bath set at 44.5 degrees celcius and not 45 degrees?
Somebody figured the optimum temperature for some reaction. There is also some optimum temperature to transfer the correct temperature to the reactants. Probibly a lower temperature. The final temperature when everything reaches equilibrium probibly should not exceed 45 degrees or the reaction will reverse. Why is a water bath set at 44.5 degrees celcius and not 45 degrees?
